Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: clean

Weakness: not 24 bit as marketing claims. Creative is a very shady company for marketing this as such.

For the guy who said to not worry about 24 bit sound. Just because 24 bit sound doesn't matter to you doesn't mean others will be happy with 16bits. 24bit sound is needed for recording, plain and simple. If you record in 16 bits and then adjust your instruments for volume you will loose even more bits. Not only does 24 bit sound give you wiggle room but it sounds much better. There is no way to work around the shortcommings of this card. The shortcommings are in the hardware. If you want a good sound card get an internal terratec.

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: it does what it claims has decent quality light weight

Weakness: Cmss doesn't work right cmss even makes klipsch speakers sound bad pops and clicks in certain games

I bought the extigy to get 5 channel support and dolby digital for my laptop. Then I decided to buy a 4.1 system instead of a 5.1. The extigy has decent sound quality but on processor intensive programs. Even on a PIV system with 512 ram it pops and clicks. I guess this must be a draw back of using usb 1.1. Also the cmss is horrible at reproducing sound. It spreads the signal to four speakers but at a great loss of both quality and power. Didn't think it was possible to make klipsch speakers sound bad but the extigy can do it using cmss.

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: Great concept.

Weakness: Poor implementation and poor performance.

One would be impressed to see a robust set of i/o ports and the idea of being a USB device is brilliant. However, I do not recommend this product to anyone. The volume control has no stops; meaning, the knob turns infinitely so you don't know when you've hit the min or the max volumes. That seems to be the only h/w flaw.

The s/w is an absolute joke. 5 different s/w packages were included, and all were developed differently. The install procedures for each of the packages are inconsistent with one another. One package may ask you if you want shortcuts, while another does not. One package asks where you would like to have it installed, while another does not. There is also functionality overlaps between these utilities.

Now I can live with all those flaws, however there are more serious flaws that render the product unusable and impractical. For example, one of the players has a dependancy on a software tool that is not included. This tool expects the user to have internet (a requirement not stated on the product) and it expects the user to download RealPlayer 7 from the web. Furthermore, RealPlayer 7 is no longer downloadable. The only thing similar to RealPlayer that is downloadable today is RealOne, which has user authentication problems.

The software that lets you record from something like a CD player to a hard drive expects you to create an online web account on some site. It's absurd to be forced to sign on to a web page when the user is attempting to do something locally. I went through the hoops of creating an online account anyway. I signed on so I could record from CD to hard drive. The extigy did not send a signal to the computer even when I verified that I was sending a signal to the extigy. Perhaps that is an isolated defect, but all other defects I've observed were certainly design defects.

In addition, the volume control is very slow in updating the on-screen volume level, and never did actually change the volume. Then when I ran all the uninstall procedures so I could return the equipment, not everything was uninstalled. There is still a Creative Labs popup screen when I boot.

Overall, the software has a very poor design that renders the product useless.

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: Looks nice

Weakness: Shady company and under developed product.

It's unfortunate that some companies feel it's o.k. to lie about the product they offer. This product has such poor sound quality you hard to even use. The fact that the makers boast about it's great performance makes me assume the company is nothing more then crooks. I also believe that they have posted here about their product which I think is a shady thing to do.

I think they need to go back to the drawing board and take their product a little more seriously.

The worst part is there is no alternative. Can't someone make a better product for laptops to handle high quality audio?

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: An obvious idea. Come on, anyone who owns a laptop says "Boy I Wish I Could get Audigy quality"

Weakness: Some people who buy it write stupid reviews!

Ok, for the guy who was whining about the 24 bit gig.. loosen up, get a life, and let it go. This is a beautful instrument in Creative's height of technical achievement. I'm tired of people writing crappy reviews because they were mislead in what they were getting, or the fact that they are too stupid to set it up on their computer and get it running. If there are conflicts, come on people, learn to get around those.. there is always a way around. All I have to say is: Creative, you've always been there for me, and I will always be there for you.

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: crisp 5.1 sound from a laptop .. who would have thought that was possible ? Great remote function, makes the laptop the Ideal Music Box in the hous from a far

Weakness: too vragile, the remote center can be much better, should offer infrared port,

This is the best 5.1 sound card anyone can buy at this price , the ideal option for a laptop, I connected it to the MegaWorks 5.1 THX 550 , it gave me the sounds that I needed to hear !, if you have a laptop .. this is the way to go !

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: bunch of ins/outs, digital inputs accept protected signal

Weakness: NO 5.1 OPTICAL OUT, DON'T SUPPORT DTS!!! If you're really concerned to connect this to home-theater system digitally, DON'T BUY THIS!

I received this product that I was misled this box has Dolby Digital decoding, but the word is so unclear, and never stated that the digital outs do not support 5.1 output, and then I was in overseas (I didn't have home-theater system there), and I trust the "light"...but once I returned to states, and hook it up to home-theater receiver with this unit, then the result is extremely disappointing...the optical out DO NOT SUPPORT 5.1!!!, the reason I get this is I just make my laptops have 5.1 digital out, I took about a week with Creative support, then I gone pretty mad for the answer...but the unit is not compelety useless, that I connect to my home minidisc deck digitally, and play a protected digital audio (normally I can't "export" to another minidisc digitally because it's protected), and then I just take time to record to computer digitally, and then I can make minidisc audio to mp3, even wav to CD

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: This can be a great substitute for a broken sound card equipped at my notebook.

Weakness: Not working with my HP Pavilion N3270 Notebook

This machine is not properly working with HP Pavilion N3270
(Window XP Installed, 256 RAM).
First when I installed this driver, this damaged window booting system twice. I reinstalled Window XP twice.
Narrowly when I installed the driver, it worked well with
window media player and other sound player.
But when I played Power DVD, this made the computer freezed.
I tried several times but always same problem.
I hope they can fix this error for the next model.

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: rock solid usabilty, easy setup monster features and unmatched audio quality

Weakness: none i can see

it took about 8 minutes to setup....and it was worth the 8 and the 149 dollars i paid for it,if i had an award to give,.... it would get the kick a** award for sure..and i did not buy the extigy for any other purpose but my computer,,so any other uses do not matter to me or should not matter to anyone that want's to use it for the computer...all that being said ....icould not find a single flaw in my purchase.

and as far as gaming goes it is awesome from the main speaker overide via headphones for the late night gaming ...so you dont wake the tykes to the mic volume adjustment on the front panel and not to mention the ample optical digital,..and coaxial digital.plenty of connectivity, way to go creative it looks as though you guy's have done it again. thanks for continuing the fine flow of products to the marketplace...and in to my home.

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: Good (relay) device

Weakness: Shady marketing

{Updated}
Be weary, this is NOT a 24-bit sound card. The highly touted 24-bit audio codecs only work at 24-bit for a/d and d/a conversion (pass through/translation.... when the device is used, as it can be, without a computer for hooking up different audio components). You can not use their full potential in computer recording, as the device is only 16-bit in it's audio interface with the computer. Creative's only description when it comes to this is that it has 24-bit converters. {I found this out before purchasing the product, but I had to talk to a Creative engineer to actually get the specs.}
{Since there are software packages that do work with 24-bit audio (which significantly increases audio clarity to the discerning ear), it would be nice the be able to record/play 24-bit audio with this device, which is IMPOSSIBLE. You must first drop down to 16-bit (which is ok if you can't tell the difference... Wangpull).}

If you are looking to upgrade for a desktop that already has a decent 16-bit card (ie. sound blaster live {there most innovative product and best technical achievement (intro of upgradeable DSP)} or better) don't waste your money. Since the computer interface is only 16-bit, the benefit of adding 24-bit codecs to a 16-bit audio stream won't make (much of) a difference.

Nifty direction in taking sound to an external device though... look for more of the such from other vendors in the near future.

Creative Sound Blaster Extigy Sound Device

Strengths: Easy to install and use on multiple systems

Weakness: software needs a little work

This is a must for those people on the go and are tired of listening to the little crackle sound the notebooks make when you push the audio cards and tiny speakers that come with the notebook. The little box doesn't even take up a lot of room on the desk or in the bag when traveling.
