I was blown away. I flashed firmware version 1.03 as soon as I installed the 712a. My first test run was a 4.0GB DVD image burn. This drive burned my image on a 4x rated Memorex DVD+R disk at a reported 12x, completing the file in about 6 minutes. It's flawlessly burned a few other images in +RW at 4x. The CD burner works like a charm...
Strengths: Great instructions to instal Great tech support, actual people answer the phone and they are not in India.
Weakness: Must use very specific DVD brands. The Roxio software is very weak. I have used Nero and it is much better. Plextor should partner with Ahead.
The CD burner works like a charm but the DVD burner is very sensitive to the type of media you use. I am utilizing Verbatim DataLife Plus and it works. I have yet to burn at a high rate of 8X. If you are keen on staying on the technological curve (I learned after the purchase) wait to buy your DVD burner that allows for double layering. More data to one DVD as opposed to having to use 2 DVDs.

This is my third Plextor RW drive...
Strengths: Easy installation, excellent for system backups, fast and accurate writer.
Weakness: None so far.
This is my third Plextor RW drive and as usual, I am completely satisfied. The drive installed in a snap. Downloading and installing the latest firmware was a breeze. Backing up my hard drives (the primary use for my RW's) is quick and easy. I have no problem recommending the Plextor PX-712A.

Weakness: Very few DVD+R Media Types will write at 12x
This drive is great, it's fast, and the quality of the burns is amoung the highest I have ever seen. The ability to test the quality of your DVD's on this drive is a great strength, something previously only do-able on Lite-On drives. The quality on DVD-R & DVD+R media is amazing, and it takes up very few resources due to it's 8MB buffer. The only weakness this drive has is that very few 8x DVD+R...
