I purchased Nero 6.6 Ultra based on the PC Magazine reviews. I honestly can't understand the high rating they gave this software.

First, let qualify myself. I have been developing software for almost 20 years. I have reviewed software for some major magazines, and I still write an occasional technical article for the geek community.

Now for the meat...

I purchased my copy directly from Nero and downloaded the software; which was about as intuitive as the software itself. There are about 7 installation files that must be downloaded, and there wasn't a "readme" to be found anywhere. So it’s anyone’s guess which file should be installed first, second, etc.

Nero registers itself for every type of file on your system, including Icons (*.ICO). This causes the file explorer to mask the actual icon image with the Nero application icon. They also register JPG image files, which they *DO NOT* support! Or at least none of Nero’s software installed my system will open one.

The DVD editing is so basic and so confining I found it almost useless. I found I got better quality using Microsoft’s Movie Maker, then simply burned the DVD using Nero. Nero’s “Wizard” approach to DVD editing and authoring is just too cumbersome.

Having said that, the actual time to burn the DVD was fairly fast; about 40 minutes for a 25 minute movie on a 1.8 Pentium M class CPU with 1 gig of ram.

If you don’t mind mediocre software that is anything but intuitive, then Nero is for you. As for me, I’m still looking for some stable, feature rich DVD editing software.

Weakness: Not all burner's are supported.

What they don't tell you is that it's an OEM version. It's not the full product. CD only. Does not include BackItUp, and some other part's not included. It's not even close to the Ultra 6 Suite boxed version. But for $10 it is well woth what you do get. It's easily updateable, but only update's what comes with it. I emailed Nero to find out why the other progam's weren't updated. They told me it was an illegal copy, supposed to be bundled with cd-rw, and not sold as a standalone product. They're trying to stop the sale of oem cd-only, but said it was difficult and they're lawyer's were working on it.

Nero 6 offers great performance as...

Strengths: User interface is easy to follow and read. Multiple programs to run are also great.

Weakness: Sometimes can be overwhelming.

Nero 6 offers great performance as well as multiple options. Can burn audio cds, mp3 cds, dvds, vcds, svcds, and pretty much anything else that can be done with a cd burner.

Depends on which version you get,...

Depends on which version you get, I bought one of the cheap Ultra 6 oem cd's and when I went to update it to the new 6.3 (a free update from Ahead web site) it installed and disabled ALL Nero software and said I had an invalid license, and would not accept the license I was furnished, but it worked good before the update.

Works well with dvd shrinks3.1...

Strengths: does all including direct dvd copying, you just have to downlaod additional software.

Weakness: Have not found any as of yet.

Works well with dvd shrinks3.1 which is a free program designed to work with nero for dvd movie compression and burning. Very simple to use, and just as effective as xcopy.
